I was staying with my grandma and grandpa for a couple months to help around the farm they had there. My parents came to visit and my dad showed me a storage shed that was full of wood. He cut it all from my great grandfather’s farm. He pulled out this piece of black walnut and my heart almost stopped.
It was breathtaking, even before we cut and planed it. I couldn’t wait to think of something special to use it for. Going through a handful of designs before stepping back, I realized that waiting for the inspiration to come would be better than forcing it. Especially with such an important piece of wood.
Lo and behold, three and a half years later, I decided to start my small art business. Thus, Schaedings was born. The moment I decided to make my own custom wood sign, I knew exactly what piece to carve it into!
It’s a remarkable thing, to me, to be able to say that my first Schaedings sign was carved by my own hand. Not to mention that it’s what I would consider a piece of beautiful heritage wood. To have a rare story about how this specific slab of black walnut came from my great grandfather’s farm is precious to me. The fact that the farm is no longer in the family and I was lucky enough to be able to make it my own makes it all that much more important to me.
