As my newest medium for art, working with wood is both unexpected and amazing. The hardest part is for me to not bite off more than I can chew. I’ve only been seriously working with wood since October of 2020 and I can confidently say that the learning curve is acute and unforgiving. However, that’s what makes woodworking so much more genuine and fulfilling!
With my charcoal art I can erase and start over. Digital art is easy to manipulate and delete until I get it just right. Wood art though, I can liken to breathing life into something lifeless. My fingers can feel the grain weaving throughout the wood. I can smell the essence of each piece of wood as I sand it down and cut into it. The design can literally flow underneath my fingers, mimicking the breath going in and out of a body.
It’s almost as if I can give life back to the tree that no longer stands. All I can say is that over time, I can’t wait to see how I improve and grow confident enough to do more details and intricate pieces. Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to put my fears and dreams into a piece of wood as well as my digital and charcoal art, creating a collection of three unique and identical pieces of the same design.
Food for thought!
