Footprints on My Heart is the first piece I souled with Schaedings! Created as a gift for a customer’s friend, Footprints on My Heart encompasses all the goodness within a kind and generous person. Be the brightest shining light that the world needs.
This was a priority job and I love how it turned out. The message was personal and written directly to the friend, so I wanted it to look like Riza (the purchaser) carved the words in the wood herself. It was a challenge to get the thin lines in one pass without tearing out into the other letters. In the end though, it looks exactly like it was written by her hand.
Riza allowed me to have full reign on creative freedom. Her only guidance being “I want it to look like her footprints are in the sand with a sunset.”
The Love of Creative Freedom in Footprints on My Heart
Creative freedom is my favorite part of working with a collaborator. I sent a few design drafts that I knew I would be able to finish in one day. It takes over four days for the staining and varnishing process alone, so I had to make sure that I would have enough time! The footprints, to me, should be the most important part of Footprints on My Heart.
I carved them into the red oak deeper at beginning of the piece and lighter towards the back shoreline. I felt it would add that natural depth of field, without compromising the meaning behind her words.
This was my first piece where I made it a flush wall mount. I invested in a keyhole router bit so that it sits securely on the wall, completely flush with the surface.
It was an incredible experience and I truly hope that her friend loves it as much as Riza did!
